Why is Polarization Index (PI) testing important for power transformers?
Polarization Index (PI) is the ratio of 10-minute insulation resistance to 1-minute insulation resistance. A PI value above 2.0 indicates clean, dry paper insulation, while a PI below 1.5 indicates moisture ingress or contamination that requires oil filtration or transformer drying.
What does a Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) test reveal?
DGA detects trace combustible gases dissolved in transformer oil. High Acetylene (C₂H₂) indicates high-energy arcing, Ethylene (C₂H₄) indicates thermal overheating (>700°C), and Methane/Hydrogen indicate partial discharge. DGA provides early warning of internal faults months before failure.
What is the acceptable oil BDV (Breakdown Voltage) limit under IS 1866?
For transformers rated up to 33kV, the minimum acceptable transformer oil breakdown voltage (BDV) is 30 kV for oil in service, and 40-50 kV for filtered/new oil. Oil with BDV below 30 kV requires immediate vacuum dehydration and filtration.
How often should distribution and power transformers be tested?
